Spreading habit is low when young eventually it grows upright to 4' tall and 5' wide with a distinctive and beautiful tiered branching pattern.  Insignificant small white flowers.  Cool, very cool. This shrub has shocked us with its hardiness to cold. It survived temperatures in the single digits in a container and didn’t flinch. This is a wonderful foliage shrub that should be more popular. Excellent appearance year round. Drought tolerant.

Coprosma x Evening Glow’ Zn8b (15º to 20ºF) Rubiaceae

A spectacular variegated plant that is tender to cold, BUT, is much more tolerant of adverse weather conditions that, say, Coleus and will often overwinter. A seaside evergreen shrub from New Zealand with shiny leaves decorated in orange and gold, green and red. Full sun to light shade. To 2' tall in a year and as wide. Regular water. Tip prune to control the size. Undamaged in a container to 18ºF. Super pretty!

Coprosma x kirkiiVariegata’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Rubiaceae

Cold hardy and a very groovy garden plant. This little spreading evergreen shrub makes a great addition to the front of a border or a container. 2' tall and 4' wide. Great with ornamental grasses in the fall and winte nice looking year round. Full sun to light shade with occasional summer water. Tough. This plant was totally hardy at 10ºF. Good in rock gardens. Coprosma ‘Rainbow Surprise’ Zn9a (20º to 25ºF) Rubiaceae

A spreading tender evergreen shrub that we like to refer to as 'Willy Wonka Boxwood'. To 20" tall and as wide in a season, the variegated glossy leaves make it a great container element or even as part of a seasonal bed. Full sun to light shade with average soil and water. A GREAT winter container plant, if it is protected from temperatures below 20∞F. Looks shiny and fresh for a long time. Takes autumn rain and wind well.

Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ Zn4a (-30º to -25ºF) Cornaceae

Large growing deciduous shrub prized for the brilliant display of twigs when the leaves

are gone. Vivid red, orange and yellow twigs vibrate with color during winter. The best

display of this plant comes from an annual coppicing of the stems, this is best done

in March. Light green leaves turn light yellow in the fall before dropping. Eventually, it can

become a rather large shrub to 15’ tall and 10’ wide if not pruned.  Full sun, rich soil with regular water during the dry summer months.

Corokia cotoneaster Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Cornaceae

Why, its not a Cotoneaster at all, in fact Corokia is a member of the dogwood family and evolved its twisted zigzagging stems and small leaves to fend off grazing by giant birds in New Zealand. The birds are now extinct and we are left with this shrub as a natural bonsai. To 4' tall and 3' wide. Full sun to part shade. Regular water. Great winter container plant. Yellow flowers in summer followed by red berries.

Corokia cotoneaster ‘Little Prince’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Cornaceae

A really good form of 'Netbush' with very silvery downy stems. To only 4' tall and as wide in full sun and well drained soil. Occasional summer irrigation, though quite tolerant of drought when established. Excellent for a fine, smoky texture in a mixed border. Small yellow flowers in summer. Adaptable to part shade, but no flowers. Loses some leaves in cold winters. Great container plant, protect container from temps below 20ºF.

Corokia x virgata ‘Frosted Chocolate’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Cornaceae

If the shrub didn't immediately get your attention surely the name will. CHOCOLATE. Zig zaggy stems on this evergreen hybrid Corokia make it a work of art and in winter foliage changes to an even deeper shade of brown....CHOCOLATE. To 3' tall and as wide in 5 years, this shrub appreciates a protected location or is delicious as an architectural component in a container. Regular water, full sun. CHOCOLATE.

Corokia x virgata ‘Mangatangi’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Cornaceae

Looking more like an olive than a Corokia this form has the customary zig-zagging branching pattern

which makes it an ideal specimen and in combination with ornamental grasses. Small concave

leaves are steel gray on the surface with an underside of silver. To 5’ tall and as wide with time.

Very tolerant of drought when established. Go light on the amendments this plant does better

under tough conditions. Small yellow star-shaped flowers appear in mid-spring.

Corokia x virgata ‘Sunsplash’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Cornaceae

Dramatic shrub for a protected location. This selection of the hybrid Corokia has leaves splashed with yellow and cream, as well as sage green. Part shade to sun, but not hot afternoon sun with regular summer water. To 5' tall and 3' wide. Excellent container plant. Evergreen and looks especially good in winter. Average to rich soil that drains well.  Combine with Pittosprum t. ‘County Park Dwarf’ for great effects, astonished looks.

Corokia x virgata ‘Sunsprite’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Cornaceae

Brilliant gold leaves glow against the gray stems and make this one of the coolest selections of Corokia.  Slow growing to 3' tall and as wide in 5 years it is at its bes between deep green shrubs to add depth. Part shade to high dappled shade in a protected location. Regular summer water in rich, well drained soil. Excellent container subject for winter. Protect from severe cold (below 15ºF) Evergreen. Evergolden.

Cotinus  ‘Grace’  Zn5a  (-20º to -15ºF) Anacardiaceae

A very elegant Smoke Tree with dark maroon leaves. In June large fuzzy, airy burgundy blooms appear like a cloud of smoke. Deciduous with firey red and orange fall color. To 14' and forming a small tree. Can also be cut back each year as a shrub. Average well drained soil with little water when established. An excellent scafold for Clematis and a great companion to Crape myrtles.

Cotoneaster cooperi Zn6a (-10º to -5ºF) Rosaceae

This low growing evergreen shrub is remarkable because it will follow the slightest contour of the

ground as it grows. A pure sheet of tiny mid-green leaves covers the stems and creates an inpenetratable barrier to to weeds. Moderate growing to only inches tall it will spread to 6’ wide

in 8 years. Small white flowers in spring are followed by red berries that adds to the appeal. Plant it near a boulder and watch it smoothly grow over it- following every bump and line. Full sun and sell drained soil with occasional water to speed growth in summer. Evergreen.

Crinodendron hookerianum Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Elaeocarpaceae

Red Lantern Tree is an EXTRAORDINARY and rare evergreen from Southern Chile. In late summer pendulous flower buds form and hold through winter. In late spring they swell into 2" x 2" cherry red lanterns and persist for weeks. Tender to cold winds- appreciates consistent temperatures in part shade and moist soil- protect from subfreezing wind. To 16' tall w/a conical shape. Good on

a north or west wall. Water and mulch to establish.

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Araucariodes’ Zn6a (-10º to -5ºF) Cupressaceae

Fantastic, exotic looking conifer with rope-like branches that are sparse  and twisty when young but become denser with age. To 10' tall and forming a conical shape over time. Grows slowly in youth, picks up steam after several years. Full sun to light shade in WELL DRAINED soil, with regular summer water. Excellent specimen tree, well behaved. Always looks cool. Coldy hardy. Old selection of Japanese Cedar. Monkey Puzzle in miniature.

Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Citriodora’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Cupressaceae

A dwarf golden form of Monterey Cypress that makes a bold focal point in gardens. To 12’

tall and nearly as wide in 5 years it eventually develops a handsome spreading crown.

Foliage emerges chartreuse before moving to a more vivid gold. Takes well to pruning.

Possibly its best attribute is the amazing fragrance of the foliage, pure lemon with

the slightest touch. Good in containers but protect containers from temperatures below

15ºF, Monterey Cypress is hardy but it cannot handle frozen roots. Regular water to establish

then very tolerant of dry conditions.

Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Wilma Goldcrest’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Cupressaceae

Brilliant acid green fine textured foliage and a relatively slow growing columnar habit make this form of Monterey Cypress an AMAZING PLANT. Much hardier than first advertised it has withstood 5∞F with no damage. To 7' tall and 2' wide in 5 years. Well drained soil with occasional summer water in full sun. GREAT container plant- avoid reflected heat and protect roots from temps below 15ºF.

Easy. Better with regular water.

Cytisus battandieri  Zn6a (-10º to -5ºF) Papillionaceae

Pineapple Broom from the high Atlas mountains of N. Africa is a tough and perfectly hardy small tree for our climate. In early summer intense yellow upright flowers have a tangy Pineapple fragrance. Fast growing semi-deciduous tree for well drained POOR soil. Little water when established. Multiple trunked to 12' and 8' wide at least.  Not bothered by deer. Does not reseed.  Blooms on old wood. syn. Argyrocytisus b. Espalier candidate.

Shrubs play a vital role as the backbone of Pacific Northwest gardens.  Our winters are mild enough to enjoy a multitude of choices. Evergreen to deciduous they offer so much from profuse bloom to handsome structure.
