Seasonal
The term annual isn’t very appropriate in our climate where gardeners change their containers several times a year. This list includes primarily tender plants but also plants that shine in specific seasons.

Agapetes serpens Zn9a (20º to 25ºF) Ericaceae
A tender ericaceous shrub with long arching stems and in early spring dramatic pendulous blood red flowers on the previous years' wood. Part shade to shade and can remain in the same pot for years. Good porch plant that can be brought into the house or cold greenhouse with a hard freeze threatens. Water when dry.
Develops a gnarled  bonsai-like trunk with age. Acid fertilizer. May also be grown in a hanging basket.

Agapetes x ‘Ludgvan Cross’ Zn8b (15º to 20ºF) Ericaceae
A subtropical plant related to Rhododendrons and Blueberries. To 30" tall and arching. A superlative container plant enduring much neglect. Shade and  occasional water, if you remember. Drooping 1" red/white stripped flowers appear spring to early summer.  Easy container plant. Hardiest Agapetes to cold and may be attempted in the ground in shady, protected locations otherwise protect in a freeze-free location.

Begonia luxurians Zn9b (25º to 30ºF) Begoniaceae
Luxuriant cane-type begonia with excellent palmate leaves that droop dramatically for lovely effect. Indirect light to light shade outdoors. Tough enough to use as an accent in a seasonal container and easy enough as a house plant. Let it go a little dry between waterings during the cool season. Water and fertilize during the growing season. White flowers are nice, but not the point. 30" tall and half as wide.

Begonia maculata ‘Polka Dot’ Zn10b (35º to 40ºF) Begoniaceae
If there was a more perfect plant for a Martini lounge I’d like to see it. Arrow shaped leaves are red underneath on the green top there are perfectly round
white dots. A cane-type that can grow up to 3’ in a single season. Small pink/white flowers are not the point. A strange aspect of this plant is that the polka-dots may be rubbed off with your finger. Unfortanately, they won’t reappear.

Begonia ‘Torch’ Zn10a (30º to 35ºF) Begoniaceae
A dramatic begonia that can be used as an outdoor seasonal plant or as a house plant. To 18" tall with scimitar shaped maroon leaves and curtains of brilliant coral flowers spring until fall. Part shade in rich, but well drained soil. Water when the soil is dry and add liquid fertilizer to the water every other time you water during growing season.  Pinch if it becomes leggy.

Begonia ‘Tuberous Xera Hybrids’ Zn8b (15º to 20ºF) Begoniaceae

Don't remove the scape, it will produce flowers for weeks.

Salpiglossis a Xera Favorite         Solanaceae
We LOVE Salpiglossis and find them to be one of the prettiest flowers of all. They are closely related to Petunias, but they have different requirements. They are best grown in a cool position with plenty of sun. What is that you say? An open north exposure. Wonderful container plants in RICH, well drained soil with regular applications of fertilizer. They LOVE fish fertilizer. Remove spent flowers to encourage more- we suggest using clippers or even scissors. They have sticky leaves. Salpiglossis should be shielded from strong winds. All of this for the queen of annual flowers. (saul-pih-GLOSS-iss)
